Universal TPMS sensor

Do I need TPMS sensors with new wheels?

If your vehicle came with a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) — most trucks and SUVs from the last decade did — then yes, new wheels need sensors too.

Why

A TPMS sensor sits inside each wheel, usually on the valve stem, and reports that tire's pressure to the vehicle. Your factory sensors live in your factory wheels. Put on a new set of wheels without sensors, and the truck gets no signal: the warning light comes on and stays on, and you lose the warning you would get from a slow leak.

Your options

  • Move your old sensors across. Possible if they are healthy and fit the new wheel. But sensor batteries are sealed and last several years, so older sensors are often near the end anyway.
  • Fit new sensors. The cleanest option. They are programmed to your vehicle while the tires are off.

Universal sensors

We use universal programmable sensors that cover both frequency standards (315 and 433 MHz), so one sensor type fits most makes. They are $54.99 each, and fitting and programming are quoted with the sensors before we start — see TPMS sensors and programming.

Buying wheels and tires together? Doing the sensors at the same time saves a second trip: the tires are already off the rims.

Quick answers

Do I need TPMS sensors with new wheels?

Yes, if your vehicle has a tire-pressure monitoring system. Without sensors in the new wheels, the warning light stays on and you lose the leak warning.

Can I reuse my old TPMS sensors?

Sometimes, if they are healthy and fit the new wheels. Their batteries are sealed, so older sensors are often close to the end of their life anyway.

How much are TPMS sensors in Edmonton?

Our universal sensors are $54.99 each. Fitting and programming are quoted with the sensors before we start.
