Every tire size looks like a code — 225/65R17 — but it is only three measurements. Once you can read it, you can check what is on your vehicle in thirty seconds and know what to ask for.
How to read a tire size
| Part | Example: 225/65R17 | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 225 | Tire width in millimetres, sidewall to sidewall. |
| Aspect ratio | 65 | Sidewall height as a percentage of the width. 65 means the sidewall is 65% as tall as the tire is wide. |
| Construction | R | Radial — almost every tire today. "ZR" marks a tire rated for very high speeds. |
| Rim diameter | 17 | The wheel size it fits, in inches. |
LT at the front (LT265/70R17) means a light-truck tire built for heavier loads. Truck flotation sizes read differently: 33x12.50R20 is 33 inches tall, 12.5 inches wide, on a 20-inch wheel. After the size you will also see a load index and speed rating (for example 91H) — our guide to reading a tire sidewall covers those.
Where to find your size
On the sidewall of the tires you have now, or on the placard inside the driver's door jamb, which shows the size the vehicle left the factory with.
